GSTR-9

The annual GST return summarising a year's supplies, tax paid and input tax credit.

In short

It is due by 31 December after the year ends and is optional for turnover up to ₹2 crore. Businesses above ₹5 crore also file a reconciliation statement in GSTR-9C.

What it means

GSTR-9 is the annual GST return. It brings together everything reported in GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B during the financial year: outward supplies, tax paid, input tax credit claimed and reversed, and amendments. It gives the department one consolidated view of the year and gives the business a chance to report anything it missed during the year.

How it works

  • Due date: 31 December after the end of the financial year. GSTR-9 for FY 2025-26 is due by 31 December 2026.

  • Who files: regular taxpayers. Composition dealers file GSTR-9A, and some categories such as casual taxable persons and non-resident taxpayers do not file it.

  • Optional: filing is optional for businesses with aggregate turnover up to ₹2 crore.

  • GSTR-9C: businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore also file GSTR-9C, a self-certified reconciliation between the audited financial statements and GSTR-9.

  • Additional tax: any shortfall found while preparing GSTR-9 is paid through form DRC-03 with interest; GSTR-9 cannot be used to claim extra ITC that was never claimed in GSTR-3B.

  • Late fee: for turnover up to ₹5 crore, ₹50 a day, capped at 0.04% of turnover in that state. Higher slabs apply for larger businesses.

Example

Desai Packaging in Pune has turnover of ₹3.5 crore in FY 2025-26. Because it is above ₹2 crore, it must file GSTR-9 by 31 December 2026. It does not need GSTR-9C as it is below ₹5 crore.

While preparing GSTR-9, the accountant finds a sale of ₹50,000 with GST of ₹9,000 that was billed but never reported in GSTR-3B. The ₹9,000 is paid through DRC-03 with interest at 18%.

If Desai files on 20 January 2027, it is 20 days late:

Late fee = 20 x ₹50 = ₹1,000

Cap = 0.04% x ₹3,50,00,000 = ₹14,000

Late fee payable = ₹1,000 (lower of the two)

Key points to remember

  • Reconcile books, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B before starting GSTR-9; most errors come from differences between them.

  • GSTR-9 cannot be revised after filing, so review it carefully.

  • Report ITC reversals and ineligible credits in the correct tables; these are a common focus in scrutiny.

  • Like other returns, it cannot be filed after three years from the due date.
