GST Calculator: Add or Remove GST
Work out GST on any amount, or find the price before GST from an inclusive amount, with the CGST, SGST and IGST split.
How to calculate GST
To add GST, multiply the taxable value by the rate: ₹10,000 at 18% gives ₹1,800 of GST and a total of ₹11,800. To remove GST from an inclusive amount, divide by 1 plus the rate: ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 gives a taxable value of ₹10,000 and GST of ₹1,800.
Current GST rates
Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall into two main slabs: 5% for essentials and 18% for everything else. Luxury and sin goods such as large cars, aerated drinks and tobacco attract 40%. Gold and silver are taxed at 3% and rough precious stones at 0.25%. Many basic foods, healthcare and education services are exempt.
CGST, SGST and IGST
When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a union territory). For a supply to another state, or an import or export, the full amount is charged as IGST.
Frequently asked questions
What happened to the 12% and 28% GST rates?
They were removed from 22 September 2025. Most items at 12% moved to 5%, and most at 28% moved to 18%. Some 28% items, such as tobacco products and luxury cars, moved to 40%.
Who has to register for GST?
Businesses supplying goods with turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in some states), or services above ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states), must register. E-commerce sellers and inter-state suppliers of goods must register regardless of turnover.
Is GST charged on the total including other charges?
Yes. Packing, freight, commission and other charges billed with the supply are part of the taxable value, so GST is charged on them at the same rate.
