DPIIT Startup Recognition

Recognition from the government's Startup India scheme for young, innovative businesses.

In short

Entities up to 10 years old with turnover not above ₹200 crore in any year can apply. Recognition opens benefits such as easier compliance and the section 80-IAC tax holiday for eligible startups.

What it means

DPIIT startup recognition is official recognition under the government’s Startup India programme, given by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It confirms that your business is an eligible startup. That opens up tax benefits, easier compliance, and access to government support schemes and funds.

How it works

Under the revised startup definition notified in February 2026, an entity can apply if it meets these conditions:

  • It is a private limited company, a registered partnership firm, an LLP, or an eligible cooperative society.

  • It is no more than 10 years old from the date of incorporation or registration.

  • Its turnover has not exceeded ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation. This limit was earlier ₹100 crore. Deep tech startups get a longer age limit and a higher turnover limit.

  • It works on innovation, on improving products, services or processes, or on a scalable business model with potential for jobs or wealth creation.

  • It is not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.

You apply online on the Startup India portal with incorporation documents and a short note on what is innovative about the business. Recognition is usually granted in a few weeks.

Main benefits:

  • Section 80-IAC tax holiday (old Act section): 100% deduction of profits for any 3 consecutive years out of the first 10. This is for companies and LLPs incorporated before 1 April 2030, with a separate certificate from the Inter-Ministerial Board.

  • Self-certification under certain labour and environment laws

  • Cheaper and faster patent and trademark filings

  • Relaxed norms in government procurement

Example

FarmSense Technologies Private Limited, incorporated in 2022, is DPIIT-recognised and gets the 80-IAC certificate. In FY 2025-26 it earns a profit of ₹40,00,000.

  • Tax without the deduction at 25%: ₹10,00,000

  • Plus 4% cess: ₹40,000, for a total of ₹10,40,000

  • With 80-IAC, taxable profit becomes nil, saving up to ₹10,40,000 before considering MAT

Key points to remember

  • DPIIT recognition alone does not give the tax holiday. You must apply separately for the 80-IAC certificate.

  • Companies that opt for the concessional 22% regime cannot claim 80-IAC.

  • Recognition ends once the age or turnover limit is crossed.

  • Keep the profile on the Startup India portal updated, as the government may ask for information.
