What Udyam registration is and who benefits
Udyam registration is the official recognition of a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise under the MSMED Act. Registration on the government portal is free of charge, and the classification draws on investment and turnover data linked to the business's PAN and GST records.
Registration can help access schemes and benefits for MSMEs, such as priority sector lending, credit guarantee schemes and certain government procurement preferences.
It also gives registered micro and small enterprises the protection of delayed-payment provisions, under which buyers must pay within specified time limits. Manufacturers, service providers and traders, for specific purposes, can all apply.
How to register and what details are needed
The application is made on the Udyam Registration portal. The applicant authenticates using the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, Karta or authorised signatory, followed by the PAN of the enterprise.
Details required include the business name and type of organisation, address of the office and units, bank account, date of commencement, number of employees, and NIC codes describing the main activities.
Investment and turnover figures are largely drawn from income tax and GST records linked to the PAN. Choosing NIC codes that match the actual activity is important, since the classification of manufacturing versus services affects eligibility for certain schemes.
MSME status for Mumbai's small businesses
Mumbai has a large base of small enterprises: garment and textile units, jewellery workshops, printing and packaging businesses, food processors, and service firms in IT, design and media. Many supply to large corporates headquartered in the city.
For such suppliers, Udyam registration matters because larger buyers must track and disclose dues to registered micro and small suppliers, and the Income-tax Act links deduction of certain payments to timely payment of MSME dues.
The MSME Samadhaan portal allows registered micro and small enterprises to file delayed-payment cases, which are heard by the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council for the region.
Why get your Udyam registration through Finaccle
Registration on the portal is free, and our role is to make sure the details filed are correct. Errors in NIC codes, unit addresses or organisation type can affect your eligibility for schemes and the credibility of your certificate with buyers and lenders.
Our Mumbai team checks that your PAN, GST and income tax data are consistent before filing, so the classification reflects your business accurately.
As your business grows, we update the registration when investment, turnover or activities change. Because we also handle accounting and tax compliance for many businesses, we can help you use MSME status in practice, such as tracking dues from buyers.
MSME (Udyam) Registration in Mumbai: FAQs
Is there a government fee for Udyam registration?
No. Registration on the official Udyam Registration portal is free of charge. Be cautious of websites that look official but charge fees for registration. Professional firms like Finaccle charge only for assistance with preparing and verifying the application, choosing the correct NIC codes and handling later updates, not for the registration itself.
Can a Mumbai-based service business register as an MSME?
Yes. Service enterprises such as IT firms, consultancies, design studios and media businesses can register under Udyam. Classification as micro, small or medium is based on investment in equipment and turnover, using the same combined criteria as manufacturing enterprises. Choose NIC codes that match the actual services you provide.
Do I need GST registration to apply for Udyam?
A PAN is mandatory. GSTIN is required where the enterprise is liable to be registered under GST. Businesses that are not required to register for GST, for example those below the GST threshold, can still obtain Udyam registration using their PAN. Turnover data from income tax records is then used for classification.
What happens if my business grows beyond its MSME category?
The classification is updated based on investment and turnover data drawn from income tax and GST records. If you move up a category, the change applies according to the rules notified by the Ministry, and if you cross the medium enterprise limits, the business is no longer an MSME. Keep the registration updated so buyers and lenders see the correct status.
