What Udyam registration is and who should get it
Udyam registration is the official recognition of a micro, small or medium enterprise under the MSMED Act, 2006. Classification depends on both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover. From 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise has investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore, a small enterprise up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, and a medium enterprise up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.
Manufacturers and service providers of any constitution can register, from proprietors to companies. Retail and wholesale traders can also register, though their registration counts only for priority sector lending purposes. Registration is voluntary, but many benefits are available only with a valid Udyam certificate.
How registration works
The applicant's Aadhaar is verified by OTP: the proprietor's for a proprietorship, the managing partner's for a firm or LLP, and the authorised signatory's for a company. PAN and GSTIN of the enterprise are then validated, and investment and turnover figures are pulled from income tax and GST data where available.
The key choices are the correct constitution, the NIC activity codes for your manufacturing or service activities, units and plant locations, and bank details. Errors in NIC codes or classification are common and can affect eligibility for schemes later. Once filed, the certificate is issued online. It must be updated when details change, and classification is revised automatically from filed returns.
Why Delhi businesses register under Udyam
For Delhi's small manufacturers, job-workers and service firms that supply larger companies, a key benefit is protection under the MSMED Act on delayed payments: buyers must pay within agreed terms, not exceeding 45 days, and delayed payments carry interest. Buyers also face a tax consequence, as unpaid dues to micro and small enterprises beyond that period are disallowed as a deduction until paid.
Suppliers to government departments and PSUs in Delhi can use Udyam registration for MSE preferences under public procurement policy, including in tenders on the GeM portal. Registered enterprises also benefit from priority sector lending and the lower trademark filing fee. Delayed-payment disputes can be referred to the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council.
Why register through Finaccle's Delhi office
Udyam registration is free on the government portal and simple in form, so our role is to make sure it is correct: right constitution, right NIC codes, correct units and locations, and classification consistent with your tax filings. We also flag cases where registration is not advisable or needs data clean-up first.
A Chartered Accountant reviews the filing, and we explain how to use the certificate: adding MSME status to invoices and vendor forms, tracking the 45-day payment rule on your receivables, and when to update the registration. We do not charge government fees on the portal; our fee is for professional work only. Delhi clients can meet us at Aerocity or complete the process online.
MSME (Udyam) Registration in Delhi: FAQs
Is there any fee for Udyam registration?
There is no government fee for Udyam registration on the official portal, and no documents need to be uploaded for the basic registration. Be cautious of websites that look official and charge a fee for the certificate itself. A professional adviser's fee, if any, is only for preparing and checking the application.
Can a trader in Delhi get Udyam registration?
Yes. Retail and wholesale traders can register on the Udyam portal, but under the government notification their registration is for priority sector lending purposes. Some benefits meant for manufacturers and service enterprises may not extend to them. We check what a trading business can actually use the certificate for before filing.
Do I need a GST number for Udyam registration?
GSTIN is required where the enterprise is liable to register under GST. Businesses exempt from GST registration can still obtain Udyam registration without it, using PAN. PAN is mandatory for all enterprises except proprietorships in limited cases. Investment and turnover data is then linked to income tax and GST records.
How does Udyam registration help with delayed payments?
Micro and small enterprises registered under Udyam are protected by the MSMED Act: buyers must pay within the agreed period, not exceeding 45 days, or pay compound interest at three times the bank rate. Unresolved disputes can be referred to the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council for conciliation and arbitration.
