When a Mumbai business must register for GST
Registration becomes mandatory once aggregate turnover crosses the threshold: ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services and ₹40 lakh for businesses exclusively supplying goods in Maharashtra. Certain businesses must register regardless of turnover.
These include anyone making inter-state taxable supplies of goods, sellers supplying through e-commerce operators such as online marketplaces, casual taxable persons, and persons liable under reverse charge. Many service providers make inter-state supplies of services and may still be exempt below the threshold, so the analysis depends on what you sell and to whom.
Some businesses also register voluntarily because their corporate clients prefer GST-registered vendors who allow them to claim input tax credit.
The application process and documents
The application starts with Part A of REG-01, where PAN, mobile number and email are verified through OTP to generate a temporary reference number. Part B then captures business details, promoters, authorised signatory, principal and additional places of business, goods and services codes, and bank account.
Documents usually include PAN of the business, incorporation certificate or partnership deed, photographs and identity proof of promoters, and proof of the business premises, such as a rent agreement, electricity bill and owner's consent letter.
Aadhaar authentication of the promoter and signatory is opted for during filing. Where authentication is not completed or the application is flagged, a physical verification of the premises may follow.
Registering in Maharashtra: what Mumbai applicants face
Mumbai applications are assigned either to the Maharashtra state GST administration or to a central GST commissionerate. The assigned jurisdiction then handles registration queries and later compliance matters.
Common reasons for clarification notices in Mumbai include a mismatch between the address on the electricity bill and the application, a rent agreement in a different name, or a commercial unit in a building listed as residential. Co-working spaces and shared offices, popular across Andheri, Powai and BKC, need a proper agreement from the operator.
E-commerce sellers and D2C brands that store goods in third-party warehouses in Bhiwandi or elsewhere must declare those warehouses as additional places of business.
Why Finaccle for GST registration in Mumbai
Most GST registration delays come from small document mismatches that only show up after the officer reviews the file. Our team checks the address, ownership, and HSN or SAC codes before submission, so the application reflects how your business actually operates.
The work is handled online with CA supervision, and the Mumbai team can coordinate if a physical verification visit is scheduled at your premises.
If a notice for clarification is issued, we draft the reply and upload any additional documents. Once registration is granted, we can also take on monthly or quarterly return filing so that the registration does not become a source of late fees.
GST Registration in Mumbai: FAQs
What is the GST registration threshold for a business in Mumbai?
For businesses supplying only goods within Maharashtra, registration is required once aggregate turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh in a financial year. For service providers, the threshold is ₹20 lakh. These limits do not apply to businesses that must register compulsorily, such as inter-state suppliers of goods or sellers on e-commerce marketplaces.
Do I need GST registration to sell on Amazon or Flipkart from Mumbai?
Generally yes. Sellers supplying goods through e-commerce operators that collect tax at source are required to register irrespective of turnover, subject to certain exemptions notified for small intra-state suppliers. The GSTIN is also needed to complete seller onboarding on most marketplaces. If you use their warehouses, those locations may need to be added to your registration.
Can I get GST registration for a home office in Mumbai?
Yes, a residential address can be declared as the principal place of business. You will need proof such as an electricity bill or property tax receipt, and a consent letter from the owner if the property is not in your name. The officer may ask for clarification if the address details do not match exactly.
What happens if the GST officer raises a query on my application?
The officer issues a notice seeking clarification, and you must respond with the requested information or documents within the time stated, usually through Form REG-04 on the portal. If the reply is satisfactory, the registration can be approved. If no reply is filed or it is inadequate, the application may be rejected and a fresh one filed.
