Introduction
In India, the Income Tax Department of the central government issues a 10-digit alphanumeric number to all person who bear the responsibility of collecting tax at source(TCS) or deducting tax at source(TDS). This number is unique and is known as the TAN. The TAN number has to be quoted on all TDS returns filed.
Reasons for holding Tan
You cannot file TCS and TDS statements if you do not have a TAN.
TAN number is required when you seek challans for TDS or TCS payments.

Modes of Tan application
Online Application:
You can visit the NSDL-TIN website to apply for TAN. An acknowledgement will appear on the screen at the time of confirmation of the correct uploading of the TAN allotment application.
Process to obtain Form 49B
One of the issue which a lot of applicant face is scant information on the availability of this Form. The form can be availed in multiple ways:
It can be downloaded for free from the IT department?s official website.
Form can also be freely obtained at any TIN-FC Centre.
Lastly, any eligible photocopy of this Form is also accepted at NSDL centres.
Offline Application:
The offline method is still prevalent for those who are not well versed with the online procedures. Applicants must obtain a copy of Form 49B and complete all the details required before submitting it to their nearest TIN Facilitation Centre(TIN-FC)
